Internal communication gaps

Is it just me, or does anyone else see the disconnect?

Houston, we’ve got a problem.

Leaders, you say you want a world-class communication function. But does what you’ve built actually support that vision?

There’s an influx of seasoned strategic communicators available—both as consultants and for full-time roles. It’s got me thinking: why does this communication gap keep happening?

Either leaders have overestimated their internal communications setup, or they haven’t prioritized internal communications as a strategic function. Either way, it’s costing organizations. When internal communication gaps go unaddressed, strategy stalls, trust erodes, and business momentum suffers.

The reality check:

  • CEOs lack confidence: Only 17% feel their communications and public affairs functions are well-equipped to navigate today’s challenges. (Weber Shandwick)

  • Trust is declining: Leadership credibility is slipping, impacting employee confidence and engagement. (2025 Edelman Trust Barometer)

  • Employees are frustrated: Constant change is leading to fatigue and disengagement. (2025 Gallagher State of the Sector Report)

Yet… Gallagher’s 2025 State of the Sector report also found that employee engagement is one of the top five business metrics tracked by communication professionals.

So, if organizations are measuring engagement, why aren’t more leaders fully investing in internal communication as a strategic driver?

If your internal communication function isn’t delivering business results, it’s time to reassess. Star Thrower Communication helps leaders build communication strategies that drive engagement, trust, and performance.
